Turn the chair upside down onto some paper using a table as a support. Trace around the edge of the chair seat onto the paper. Add a seam allowance of 1 inch around the edge of the pattern. This is your cushion pattern piece.

Hold your pattern piece against the chair to check it is a good fit. Mark the pattern to show where the ties will be attached to the cushion. Place the fabric on the seat of the chair to check how the pattern will sit within the seat. Pin the pattern piece over the printed area you want to feature on the chair.

Cut out two identical pieces of the top fabric. Cut the amount of wadding to suit the thickness you're looking for. We used two pieces of wadding. Set the wadding aside.

Take the top fabric piece and pin a velour ribbon around the outer edge, folding a knife pleat as you pin. It should only run around the front and sides of your cushion.

Place the second pattern piece of fabric on top making sure you have wrong sides together. Stitch around the edge of the cushion leaving the straight back edge open. Turn it inside out, ready to stuff. Place the wadding together and trim 0.5 inches off the edge so that it doesn't ripple under the fabric.

Before you stitch the cushion closed, you need to make the ties. Cut a length of 50cm and fold it in half. Place the folded end inside the cushion opening. Fold the fabric edges inside the cushion.

Pin it all closed before stitching it all in place on the sewing machine. A simple straight stitch on your machine will finish it off neatly. You can also hand stitch to hide the thread.

Stitch a run of the velvet ribbon around the edge of the cushion between the frill and the printed fabric. Now your cushion seat is ready to be tied to your chair!
