How-to Make a Halloween Table Setting
This dramatic table setting is perfect for the spooky season. Create a woodland theme using foraged twigs, moss and pine cones, and pepper your table with toy insects to keep the kids amused during your Halloween supper.
What you'll need:
• black paper table cloth with a plastic backing
• 1 piece of white cheesecloth (sold pre-cut to size)
• various plants in plant pots & planters (you can use indoor or outdoor foliage)
• candles & candlesticks
• foraged sticks & branches
• toy bugs and spiders or any faux creepy crawlies
• homemade napkins (we used Watering Can Harvest from The Chateau by Angel Strawbridge)
• dinnerware and cutlery
• ceramic pumpkin place setting (you can use real pumpkins as an alternative)
Step 1.
Start by making the napkins. Use an existing napkin to trace the size for your homemade ones. You can leave the edges frayed or with a double turned hem for a traditionally finished clean edge.
Step 2.
Make the side hems first. Roll over twice and use a straight stitch on the sewing machine to hold them in place. Press the side hems flat with an iron before stitching the last two edges.
Step 3.
Cover the table with a black paper tablecloth with a plastic backing - perfect for the kids when they are crafting at the dinner table. Crumple the tablecloth to create a Halloween texture. Scrunch the entire tablecloth into a ball and lay it across the table.
Step 4.
Layer a piece of white cheesecloth down the centre of the table to create a table runner. For the centrepiece, take an old garden tray and place a candelabra in the middle.
Step 5.
Fill the rest of the space with four plants mixing colour and texture. Place three more plants at either end of the tray using plant pots.
Step 6.
Use any container or pot to house the plants as long as you can group them down the centre of the table and easily water. Add tapered candlesticks to the candelabra.
Step 7.
Place your foraged sticks and twigs in and around the ‘woodland’ plants. Add your creepy crawly insects to the display, placing some of the giant insects on the branches.
Step 8.
Time to lay the dinnerware and place settings. Pinch the napkins in place with black leather napkin ties and place neatly next to the dinner plates. Mini ceramic (or real) pumpkins can be used as personalised place settings with the cutlery grouped together to the side of the plates.
