This very simple shade can roll up to fit snugly under your arm or will fit into the crowded boot of your car. You can use an old pair of curtains or some lovely fabric if you want to look stylish! You can even spray it with a waterproof sealant, so that you don’t get a soggy bottom when the heavens open.
What You’ll Need:
• Bamboo or wooden broomstick/pole (the size depends on how big you want your finished shade to be.)
• Saw
• Fabric panel (mine was 130 × 250cm/51 × 98 inch)
• Sewing machine
• Cotton
• 4 eyelets
• 4 pieces of cord
• Drill and drill bit (this should be the same diameter as the dowel)
• 2 small pieces of dowel
• Wood adhesive/strong adhesive
• Hammer
• 4 tent pegs
• An old pair of curtains or fabric
This craft features in A Taste of the Chateau.
Cut the bamboo or wooden broomstick/pole to the following lengths: 1 × the same length as the width of your fabric, 2 × the height you want the shade.
Sew a nice, neat hem around the edges of the fabric. Fold the fabric in half along the long side to mark the centre point of your tent. Draw a line across the centre of the fabric.
Make two small pieces of excess fabric into ‘pockets’ to hold the centre top pole in place. The size of the pockets will depend on the diameter of the pole you are using, but you need a snug fit. Sew onto the centre line at either side of the sunshade.
Attach an eyelet to each corner of the fabric. Attach a piece of cord to each eyelet (these will be the guide ropes).
Secure the longest pole into the pockets. Make a small mark on each end of the pole, just beyond the pockets.
Remove the pole and, using the drill and drill bit, drill small holes in the centre pole at the marked points.
To make the uprights - Drill a hole in the top of the two upright poles Fill the hole with wood adhesive and push the dowel into the hole.
Replace the centre pole in the pockets and insert one upright into each of the holes. Use the tent pegs to secure the cords into the ground to stabilise the shade and hold everything down securely.
