How-to Make a Macrame Shelf
Get to grips with the art of tying knots in patterns and create something gorgeous and functional with this eye-catching macrame shelf.
What you'll need:
• 3mm 4-strand macrame cord (a 200m roll will give you plenty left over)
• Scissors and masking tape
• MDF shelves (or any other material~)~, cut down to 40cm/15cm x3
• GDrill a bit for making holes in the shelf(8mm drill bit to thread x4 strands of cords through each hole)
• BA rod to hang the shelf from (wooden doweling or a brass rail or plastic) 60cm long
• Nail or hooks to hang the rod and shelf
• Drill and plugs to secure it to the wall.
• Spirit level.
Step 1.
Start by cutting a length of cord approximately 2m long. Fold it in half and drape it over the rod. Put the ends of the cord inside the loop and pull them down until the cord is wrapped tightly around the rod. This is called larks head knot. Tie 26 Larks head knots and line them up in pairs with a 1" gap between each pair.
Step 2.
Next make an alternating square knot using x4 strands of cord (or two pairs),that are spaced at least 1" apart. Pull the knots down tight approximately 1.5" down from the previous knot to create the netted effect. Once you have completed 4 rows of knots, fix the macrame hanging onto the wall using hooks, screws and plugs.
Step 3.
Cut 3x shelves at 40cm long x 15cm deep using 18mm MDF offcuts and drill x3 8mm holes on each end. Wrap the ends of the cord in masking tape so it doesn't fray when feeding it through the holes. Start from the end of the hanging. Thread the first 4 cords through the front of the shelf, then another 4 in the middle hole, and a final 4 cords through the black hole on the shelf.
Step 4.
Tie regular double knots underneath to hold the shelf in place. Tie them loosely initially so that you can adjust them if it's not level. Continue the alternating square knot down from beneath the shelf. This is how it looks with the square knots running under the back of the shelf edge and the regular double knots along the sides of the shelf under the holes.
Step 5.
Then start a second row of alternating square knots, making sure the knots are all in line with each other as you work around the sides of the shelf. Once you have completed 4 rows of alternating square knots, add a second shelf using a spirit level to check the shelf is hung straight. Repeat the same process of knots under the second shelf and then add a 3rd shelf. Continue the rows of square knots under the third shelf until you are happy with a length of the hanging in the space it is to be hung.
Step 6.
Trim the extra length of loose cords and group together to create an old fishing net look with a gathered end. Use an off-cut of cord approximately 50cm long to make a loop. Hold the loop against the gathered cord ends and begin by wrapping the long cord end around the bunch working your way up to the bunched cord leaving the loop poking out the top and the short end of the loop poking out the bottom of the wrapped cord.
Step 7.
Place the long end of the cord through the loop and pull the short end of the loop sticking out the bottom down the loop. Then pull the long cord through and under the wrapped section without making a big knot to hold it tight in place. Cut the cords to the same length to finish the tassel. By threading the cords through the sides of the shelf at multiple points you get this amazing curved edge shelf.
Step 8.
