How To Set Up a Well-Equipped Shed

The shed is the hub of a sustainable plot as it keeps it functioning efficiently while the right tool for the job makes all the difference. We love our tools and tend to favour manual over mechanised. While machines are sometimes best for getting the job done, in general, we believe more traditional tools help you become more connected to the land and more productive overall. Hand tools are nearly always cheaper and easier to maintain.

Tips & Tricks

• Hanging tools up saves space in a small shed.

• Keep a good selection of hand tools for the garden.

• Shelves and hooks keep a big shed tidy and well organised. Use a floor-
standing rack to stop tall tools falling over. Put trays and boxes on the shelves
to store small items neatly.

• Spades receive plenty of use so it’s worth investing in really solid ones that
won’t bend.

• Keep a box for bits and bobs – you never know when they will come in handy
for an eco-project.

• A dibber is useful for repotting small plants and for planting onion sets. Look
out for different sizes.

• A riddle is ideal for sieving soil or home-made compost to get rid of stones
and bits of twig.

• Store squashes on the shelves if your shed is frost-free. Turn them regularly
so they don’t rot.

• A screw press is ideal for squeezing fruit to make wine, cider and juices.

• Having an area in your shed for potting up seedlings is handy when it’s
raining and you’ve still got jobs to do.
