How-To Create a May Day Ribbon Canopy (Maypole)

This joyful Maypole craft is taken from our latest book A Taste of The Chateau.

We have so many memories of watching people dance around the Maypole. If you are having a spring party, ribbon is a brilliant way of adding a burst of colour. We used a damaged parasol for our 'pole and a mix of ribbons from other crafting and gift wrapping.

What You'll Need:

Drill and metal drill bit
Old parasol frame (with the fabric removed) and stand
String
Tape measure
Ribbon - lots and lots of it, different thicknesses and colours
Cable ties
Scissors

Step 1.

Use the drill and metal drill bit to drill a hole 3cm/1¼ inch from the end of each parasol strut.

Step 2.

Open the parasol and place on its stand.

Step 3.

Pass a long piece of string through each of the drilled holes. When you come back to go through the first hole, tie both ends of the string securely together.

Step 4.

Measure the length of the struts.
A) Cut some ribbon to twice the length of the struts plus 10cm/4 inch.
B) Cut some ribbon to the length of one strut plus the height from the ground
C) Cut some ribbon to the length of both struts plus the height from the ground

Step 5.

Bundle the ribbons together in batches of 'A; 'B' and 'C' lengths.

Step 6.

D) Find the centre point of each bundle and secure with a cable tie to the top of the parasol

Step 7.

Tie the ends of the ribbon to the string as follows:
Ribbon A: Tie both ends of each length of string to opposite sides of the parasol.
Ribbon B: Tie one end on the string and allow the other end to fall down the centre pole.
Ribbon C: Tie one end on the string, pass the other end over the opposite side string and tie where it touches. Then allow the rest of the ribbon to fall to the floor.
Move around the string so that the hanging ribbons are evenly spaced around the frame

Step 8.

Twist the ribbons from 'B' around the centre pole to create a Maypole effect and secure in place.
