Father's Day: How-to Make Homemade Noughts & Crosses in a Bag
Noughts & crosses is such a wonderfully nostalgic game full of childhood memories. Making a home for the game in a pouch is perfect for a spontaneous game with the kids or grandkids!
What you'll need:
• 0.5m of top fabric (we used Nouveau Heron!)
• 0.5m of bias bindingc
• 0.5m of cord (we use leather)
• 18x18cm of felt
• a can of spray adhesive embroidery thread and needle a selection of pebbles
• acrylic paint and craft brushd
• a permanent marker
Step 1.
Start by cutting a piece of fabric 40cm x 22cm and then folding it in half, right sides together. Then stitch a seam down the open sides of the folded fabric. Move the seam around to the front of folded fabric and press the seam open with an iron. Stitch the bottom of the fabric using a straight stitch on your sewing machine.
Step 2.
For the top edge of the bag, roll it over twice by 1cm each time and stitch it down along the edge. Turn the bag inside out and stitch the bias binding, around the top of the bag. Only stitch along one side of the bias binding first, leaving the ends open for the cord to thread through.
Step 3.
Take the leather cord and place it under the bias binding with enough excess to run out the ends of the binding at the back of the bag. Stitch the second line on the bias binding, creating a closed channel for the cord to run through. Trim the loose ends of the cord. Holding both ends together, tie a knot to make a closed loop. Cut a piece of felt to sit nicely on the back of the bag.
Step 4.
On one side of the felt draw a grid. Take some embroidery thread and a needle and hand stitch along the grid from the back side of the felt. Tie a simple knot at the end of the thread to stop it coming loose.
Step 5.
Turn the felt around and this is the noughts & crosses grid you will play on. To attach the felt grid to the bag you can use some spray adhesive. Position your grid on the back of your bag and press it down until the glue dries.
Step 6.
Step 7.
On one side of the felt draw a grid. Take some embroidery thread and a needle and hand stitch along the grid from the back side of the felt. Tie a simple knot at the end of the thread to stop it coming loose. Turn the felt around and this is the noughts & crosses grid you will play on. To attach the felt grid to the bag you can use some spray adhesive. Position your grid on the back of your bag and press it down until the glue dries.
Step 8.
For the actual noughts & crosses counters paint white circles on some pebbles using acrylic paint. Use a marker pen to draw the noughts & crosses inside the painted circle and there you have the perfect little game that can be bagged up and carried around with you!
