How-To Make A Fabric Book Cover

This craft is easy to make, so if you want to take this DIY further, you could adorn your book cover with embroidery or some appliqué or personalise it by adding your initials; the possibilities are endless.

What you'll need:

- Your book
- Enough fabric to cover your book plus 4” at either end (our choice was Nouveau Wallpaper!)
- Sewing machine and thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- A tape measure

Step 1.

Lay the book on the fabric. Open it up to make sure you cut a big enough piece to cover both the front and the back of the book.

Step 2.

Make sure you have a one-inch seam allowance across the top and bottom edge of the book. Leave at least a four-inch seam allowance at either end of the book. If you have a deep book leave more seam allowance just to be safe.

Step 3.

Fold over the ends twice and press with an iron for a crisp line finish. Then pin the seam. Use a straight stitch on the sewing machine to hold the seam in place. Do the same on the other end of the fabric so you have nicely hemmed ends.

Step 4.

Lay your book on the fabric with the front cover open. Begin to fold over the top and bottom edges twice, making sure the finished edge is in-line with the edge of the book cover. Remove the book so you can finish folding the edges over and then press them down with an iron.

Step 5.

Place your book back on the fabric and fold the ends over the book cover to check where you will need to stitch them into place. Carefully close the book to make sure you can pull the fabric around, so it is taught, and that the fabric covers the entire book cover.

Step 6.

Place a pin on the outer part of the book cover to mark where the flap edge needs to meet to be stitched in place. Make sure both flaps are even in size.

Step 7.

Straight stitch across the top and bottom edge of the book cover. Pin both the flap and the top hem in place. Stitch as close to the edge as possible so the book fits inside it. The fabric should be taught but loose enough to ensure the book doesn’t buckle.

Step 8.

Slide your book into the sleeves one at time and close it to make sure it is a snug fit.
