How-To Make A Baguette Bag

Ideal for picnics or simply bringing home your bread from the shop! Make your own reusable baguette and bread bag with this crafty ‘how-to’ using fabric from The Chateau.

What you'll need:

• Max 1m of fabric (we use Honeycomb by The Chateau)
• Matching thread
• Scissors
• Tape measure
• Pins & sewing machine

Step 1.

Cut two pieces of fabric (30cm x 50cm) so they fit two baguettes side by side. Stitch the side seams first. Use a straight stitch for the seam. Then use a zigzag stitch to finish the edges and prevent any fraying.

Step 2.

Once the side seams are stitched in place, put the fabric to one side while you make the handle and loop.

Step 3.

Cut a strip (10cm wide by 70cm), fold it in half and pin in place. Stitch down the raw edge making a long channel of fabric. Turn the channel inside out and press it flat with an iron, this is the bag handle.

Step 4.

Fold the end of the bag handle inside to make a neat finish. Stitch it closed by using a straight stitch on your machine.

Step 5.

Place the finished end of the handle inside the bag. Pin it at the centre of the bag’s bottom edge. Stitch all 3 layers together, sandwiching the handle between the two bag layers. Turn the bag the right way around to make sure the handle is stitched in place correctly.

Step 6.

Turn the bag inside out again. Cut a thin strip of fabric and follow the same steps above to make the loop (as you did the handle). Cut a piece of fabric 5cm x 20cm.

Step 7.

On the bag itself, fold over the raw edge at the top to make a nicely finished edge and stitch it in place. This is the bag opening. Pin the loop on one side of the bag’s opening edge. Stitch in place using a straight stitch. Make sure the loop makes a hole wide enough for the width of the handle to go through. Take the handle which is already attached to the bottom of the bag and bring it up the bag, through the loop.

Step 8.

Attach the handle to the edge on the other side of the bag. The handle and loop act as a fastening and a wider strap make it easier to carry the baguettes like a backpack!
