Pumpkin Napkin Rings

Many years ago, I was gifted an ‘Angel’ pin cushion. It took pride of place in my trésorerie and has gone on to inspire many similar crafts. Here I’ve turned the pin cushion design into a napkin ring. Making a stuffed ball of felt is a simple but very effective technique – once you’ve mastered it, you will be wondering how else you can use it.

You Will Need:
• Scissors
• 10–15cm (4-6 inches) of gold, bronze or orange (autumnal colours) felt or fabric (use offcuts if you can)
• Strong (or double strand) cotton
• Needle
• Small amount of Dacron or cotton wool for stuffing
• Gold thread (or your chosen colour)
• Small pieces of green felt
• Hot glue gun
• Glue sticks
• Green pipe cleaners (one for each pumpkin you intend to make)

This craft features in A Taste of the Chateau.

Step 1.

Cut a circle out of the autumn coloured felt or fabric with a diameter of 9cm (3½ inches).

Step 2.

Using strong (or double strand) thread, sew a line of running stitches around the circumference of the circle, approximately 0.5cm (¼ inch) from the edge. Don’t cut or tie the thread when you have completed the circle.

Step 3.

Pull the thread to create a puff. Fill the felt or fabric with a little stuffing to create a ball.

Step 4.

Once the ball is stuffed, pull the thread tight and fasten securely.

Step 5.

To create a pumpkin shape, use the gold thread (or your chosen colour) and sew through the centre of the bottom of the ball and come up out of the top. Go back into the centre of the bottom, so the thread rests against the ball, and pull the thread out through the top again. Pull slightly to indent. Repeat to make multiple segments. I like to go down the opposite side, gradually make the segments smaller, but you can decide as you go! When you have made 8 segments, tie off the thread.

Step 6.

Cut out a circle from the green felt with a diameter of 2.5cm (1 inch).

Step 7.

Using the hot glue, stick the green felt circle to the top of the pumpkin to hide the gathered material.

Step 8.

Using the hot glue again, stick a pipe cleaner in place on top of this circle to make a stalk. I like the look of 2 pumpkins together. Wrap the pumpkin(s) around a napkin to create a ring.
