Fridge Magnets

Papi Steve loves a souvenir to remember family holidays. Over the years, these have varied from massive sombreros from Mexico to illuminated life-size figures of Father Christmas that we had to bring home after a trip to Florida. More recently, with the possible (or definite) influence of Cafe Grandma saying ‘no’ to his wild ideas, he has started collecting fridge magnets. So, Arthur and Dorothy decided to make some homemade magnets for their kitchen fridge.

You will need:
• Old tins with undamaged lids
• Resin, measuring jug, wooden spatula for mixing, plastic cup
• Pictures
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Small magnets
• Hot glue gun and glue stick

Step 1.

Select your pictures – take the lids off the tins, place them on the pictures you are using and draw around them. Cut out just inside the line, so they fit nicely inside the lids.

Step 2.

Add the resin – Following the instructions as to ratios, measure our part A and B of the resin into a plastic cup and mix well. Carefully pour the resin over the picture into the lid of the tin to form a thin layer. Allow to set overnight or longer if that’s what instructions say.

Step 3.

Make them into magnets – When the resin has set, use the glue gun to stick a magnet onto the back of the lid.

Step 4.

Tips!
• Stir the resin mix gently but thoroughly so as not to make bubbles and let it sit for a few minutes to allow bubbles to rise to the top
• Tap the lid gently after pouring the resin to remove any air bubbles
• If there are a lot of bubbles, use a cook’s torch or lighter wafted gently over the surface of the resin to help get them out.
