A wholesome, lightly sweet loaf with a tender crumb, this wheaten bread is simple, nourishing, and perfect warm with butter.
What You’ll Need:
• 450g wholewheat flour
• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
• 1 tsp cream tartar
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 350ml buttermilk

Preheat the oven to 180°C / fan 160°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. Combine the flour, bicarbonate of soda, cream of tartar and salt in a bowl and make a well in the middle.
Add the buttermilk and stir well to make a soft dough. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape gently into a large patty.
Transfer to the prepared baking paper, scoring the top with a sharp knife making a pattern and bake for 30 minutes until risen and golden. Allow to cool before serving.
Serve with butter and jam.
