Wildflower Seed Paper

This craft was inspired by Nathan and Michael’s wedding at the Chateau in 2018. They gifted guests a little brown envelope with a handful of their favourite seeds and the message: ‘These flowers will be a memory of our love’. It really touched us and we thought there must be a way of combining the paper and the seeds…Et voila! It’s messy, fun and really satisfying! Once the paper is finished, decorate with someone’s name using alphabet stamps and a pressed wildflower.

What You’ll Need:

• Scrap paper, e.g. newspapers, old letters or magazines
• Big bowl
• Blender/liquidiser or hand blender
• Wildflower seeds
• Tea towels (you’ll need at least 4 or 5)
• Sponge
• Plastic tray
• Paper-making frame/screen (see Step 1)

This craft features in A Taste of the Chateau.

Step 1.

To make a frame: cut four pieces of wood exactly the same length (mine were 20cm/8 inch long). Screw wood together to make a square. Staple mesh on one side.

Step 2.

Tear up the scrap paper into small pieces. Place them in the bowl and add some water (enough to cover the pieces). Leave to soak for about 1 hour.

Step 3.

Using a blender, liquidiser or hand blender, blitz the paper to make a pulp, adding more water if it gets too thick and draining off some water if it is too runny (see Top Tips below for more info on what the consistency should be). Set aside for another hour.

Step 4.

Add the wildflower seeds and mix into the pulp. Carefully dip the paper-making frame into the pulp, flattening horizon tally under the surface. You will notice the pulp gathering on top of the net. Let it settle as evenly as possible.

Step 5.

Remove the frame from the pulp, keeping it flat and horizontal, and allow the water to drain out. Use your fingertips to prize the 4 sides of the pulp away from the edges of the frame for ease of removal and let it drain for a few minutes.

Step 6.

Cover a work surface in the tea towels (I usually place down four folded into quarters for extra absorbance) and place the frame on top. The water needs to soak out of the pulp

Step 7.

Use the sponge to push the pulp down onto the frame, soaking up as much of the water as you can from the top surface.

Step 8.

Place a dry tea towel alongside, then turn the frame over on to the dry tea towel. Rub the mesh gently with the sponge to release the paper from the frame and on to the towel. Leave to dry overnight.
