Mother's Day Gifts: Keepsake Floral Cards, Part Two
Homemade cards are the most thoughtful part of a gift. It’s not about a perfect finish, it's about the time and effort put into crafting something for someone you love.
Try your hand at these homemade cards that will be cherished keepsakes for many years to come.
Step 1.
Take an piece of A4 card in any colour you like and fold it in half. Use a contrasting colour piece of paper, and stick it onto the front of the card. Smooth it over, and trim off any over-hanging edges.
Step 2.
Choose a colour of paint for your ‘feet leaves’. Cover the bottom of your child's foot with it and then press it onto the card, these are the ‘feet leaves’. If you'd rather avoid the mess, you could just paint these on!
Step 3.
Next, cut a circle of double sided sticky tape and place it on the card where you want the flower to bloom from. We chose pinks & reds to make the flower.
Take a strip of the first colour and cut the strip of card into ‘lashes’. These dont have to be perfect or even in width, just lots and lots of lashes to make a feathery flower. We also bent the spine of the lashes with our nail so it can stick flat to the double sided sticky tape this was the perfect way for Lilli to practice her cutting skills!
Then curve your lashes to the outer edge of the double sided sticky tape and snip off any extra once you complete the circle.
The trick with the invisible stitch is to move directly across the seam, before pulling the needle through the folded fabric. Then when you pull thread tight, the threads are barely noticeable.
Step 4.
Then, cut your next strip of lashes shorter than the first so that you create a layered flower head. Snip the next layer exactly the same way you did for the first. Repeat this process in different shades of red and pink so that you build a textured and dynamic flower. Keep adding layers of lashes until the double-sided sticky tape circle is almost full!

Step 5.
Choose a colour to cut a circle out and stick it in the middle of the flower to cover the double-sided sticky tape. Starting from the centre of the flower, start to curl each lash layer. Gently bend and roll the lashes.
To make the flower look more full with lots of depth, add narrow lash sections around the outer of the flower and use glue to stick them down. Work your way around the edge of the flower and add in more of these little sections of lashes to build out the flower more.
Step 6.
Time for some leaf action! Make a rough leaf shape on some green card and cut it out. Draw on the veins with a felt tip pen! Pinch the leaf in the bottom centre, and then fold the tuck over to the side at the back of the leaf. Snipping off the bottom corners makes more of a leaf shape!
Step 7.
Then, cut narrow sections of lash using green card, but this time snip each lash to different lengths. To secure the leaf and the tendrils, glue them straight onto the back of the card around the outer edge of the flower head. Gluing the leaf down first and then the curly lashes on top of the leaf.
The layering of the leaf and lashes gives the card a lovely texture and the flower has even more movement!
Step 8.
Use garden twine to make the stem of the flower but you can use whatever you have to hand! Cut 6 lengths of twine, then tie a knot at one end and snip the excess. Braid the lengths of twine. The braid is then tied off with another knot at the end. Use glue to stick the braided stem onto the card.
